Benefits of Union Membership
The number one concern for many people is job security. Having the ability to plan for you and your family’s future with some reasonable expectation for the success of those plans is a major concern for individuals. Part of this protection includes being placed on a seniority list, which protects individuals from arbitrarily being selected for lay off. Working under a union contract provides for scheduled raises. Members do not have to worry about intimidation from their employers in negotiating their own raises. The union, through the bargaining process, will do the bargaining on your behalf. While these raises are the minimum they do not restrict the employer from paying higher wages. A union representative accompanies members at meetings with company regarding any form of possible discipline. This insures that all your rights under the contract are protected. Working conditions are established for members. There is a grievance process which provides the union with the right to air concerns for safety, reasonable workload and protection from a hostile work environment. The union provides training to help improve work skills. Trained teachers provide the necessary training needed to increase your knowledge of equipment and/or different programs that are common to the work place. |
